At Least 679 Muslims were Killed in October

No fewer than 679 Muslims were killed in the month of October while another 1451 others sustained injuries. This marks a 40% rise from September which saw 485 deaths.

However, the number of injured saw a 32.1% decrease from 2137 in September to 1451 in October. 227 or 33.4% of the Muslims killed were civilians with the remaining 452 or 66.6% being combatants. 

This blog did not record any attacks or casualties for the days 7th, 14th, 23rd, 25th, 26th and 30th.

Deadliest Day

The deadliest day in the month of October was the 9th. A total of 94 Muslims were killed on this day. A bombing at a campaign office claimed by the Taliban killed 8 civilians and injured 10 others. On the same day, Saudi airstrikes in Yemen targeting a port, a farm and a Houthi base killed 79 Houthi fighters and 7 civilians. 14.2% of all deaths occurred that day.

Civilian casualties

Of the 679 Muslims that were killed in the month of October, 227 or 33.4% were civilians. A total of 1451 Muslims were injured; 1304 (89.9%) were civilians. 43 Muslims civilians were killed by attacks that were not claimed by any entity, another 81 were injured by such attacks. Most of the injured Muslims were Palestinians protesting the Israeli occupation. At least 1183 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces in the month under review, in other words, 81.5% of the injured Muslims were Palestinians.

Combatant Casualties

Death among combatants was significantly high in October, 452 (66.6%) of the killed were combatants. The Houthi resistance movement in Yemen recorded the most casualties with no fewer than 79 fighters of the group killed by Saudi airstrikes. 147 combatants also suffered injuries.

Kills by Countries

Of the 679 Muslims that were killed in October, 492 (72.5%) were killed by countries; 130 (19.1%) of them were civilians. America killed most of the civilians in this month with 80 confirmed kills. The deadliest American attack on Muslim civilians came on the 19th when America launched several airstrikes across Syria killing 62 civilians. The targets included a village and a number of Mosques. A day before, the 18th, American airstrikes targeting a village killed no fewer than 18 civilians including 7 children. Countries that were involved in killing Muslims in October were: America, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Chad, Afghanistan, Israel, Turkey, Nigeria and India.

Kills by Groups

Armed groups were responsible for 140 deaths; this figure represents 20.6% of all deaths. The Taliban killed the highest number of Muslims with 89 kills. This is the second time in four months the Taliban has killed the highest number of Muslims in a month, the other time was in the month of August which saw the Taliban kill no fewer than 290 Muslims. The group killed more Muslims than any other entity for that month. Armed groups also killed 31 out of the 227 civilians that were killed in the month. Groups that carried out attacks on Muslims in October are: Taliban, Boko Haram, Daesh, PKK, Hashd al-Sha’abi and Sinai militants.

Unclaimed Attacks

There were 6 unclaimed attacks across the Muslim world in October, these attacks led to 47 deaths (i. e. 6.9% of all deaths) and 92 injuries. 3 of those attacks took place in Afghanistan, 2 in Syria and 1 in Somalia. Of the 47 Muslims that were killed by unclaimed attacks, 43 were civilians. 81 of the 92 injured were also civilians. The deadliest unclaimed attack came on the 13th in Somalia. Bombs targeting a restaurant and a coffee shop killed 16 civilians and injured 19 others.

Most Struck Country

Of all countries that suffered attacks, Afghanistan witnessed the most number of attacks. This blog recorded a total of 12 attacks in Afghanistan, this attacks led to 108 deaths and 97 injuries.
